I was using FreeNAS and then upgraded to TrueNAS and my version is now 13.0-U6.8
I used to get new update notifications within TruNAS dashboard and updates section. I just realize that there is a v25 main version released and a lot of previous releases.
Are these releases meant for paid users? Can community users cannot do in-place upgrades from older versions?
I have several options listed for upgrade. Since other versions named as “SCALE” I thought they are for paid users. Should I just select the “TruNAS-SCALE-Goldeye 25.10” and upgrade?
You seem to have missed most of the development of the last couple of years.
FreeNAS/TrueNAS based on FreeBSD was renamed TrueNAS CORE.
A new product based on Linux was introduced named TrueNAS SCALE.
TrueNAS SCALE was renamed TrueNAS CE.
TrueNAS CORE is “in maintenance mode” and will not receive any further updates.
There is a “final update” to TrueNAS CORE, namely 13.3-U1.2, but it’s a manual download.
So it all depends on what services you are running on your TrueNAS CORE:
If you are running jails, there is no way to newer versions. You will have to recreate all your jail based applications if you migrate to Linux based TrueNAS.
TrueNAS CE supports docker based “apps” for that. Also LXC based “containers”, but these are still experimental.
If you are running VMs these should migrate to TrueNAS CE.
If you are running only file sharing (literal “NAS”) services, you should be fine, anyway.
If you prefer to stay on FreeBSD e.g. because you run and like jails, you will need to migrate to a different product. FreeBSD based TrueNAS is dead as hinted at above.
Thank you for your explanation. I have no specific use case. It is a simple plain NAS for file sharing and protection.
Upgrade paths advise to upgrade to v24.04.2.5 and my update screen displays only 24.04 in the version selection list. I will read migration documentation and see if I am willing to do it. I have no available alternative space for taking a backup of the pool data.
