Upgrading from TruNas Core to Trunas Scale error

Hi All,

So I want to upgrade from Trunas Core to Trunas Scale, I have No jails, AFP, just 2 pools with SMB shares. I 'm running core 13.0 - I’ve updated and there are no updates pending.

Being brave I selected the upgrade train to Trunas Fangtooth 25.04. and waited for the download to complete. When it did I got the following error;

Update

Error: [EFAULT] Error: Migrating TrueNAS CORE to TrueNAS SCALE 24.10 (or later) using update file upload is not supported. Please migrate with the latest 24.04 release update file or back up the TrueNAS configuration, perform a fresh install, and restore from the configuration backup.

Do I need to boot from USB to do the upgrade?

I’m very wary of this, I have a backup, but it’ll take 2 weeks to restore. I’ve read the documentation, and have none of the problems, AFP etc. Just a basic system.

Can you give me a bit of guidance please.

It’s in the official documentation, in the very first few paragraphs:

I recommend taking time reading the migration document before you do anything else.

Here are the supported upgrade paths, if you prefer:

Don’t overlook the horizontal scrollbars.

Edit: Corrected the linkage, as it reads for the 25.04 version.

I think a simple case of RTFM. I missed the scroll bars.
Thank you, I now have Trunas Scale :slight_smile:

The reason for the upgrade was to expand the z1 pool and add another drive. that’s another day. Now for the minor upgrades.

Thank you again for your help

I too missed the scrollbars at first. It’s not a great example of good UI/UX.

Thanks for the heads up. I’m working on some updates to that page at the moment so I’ll look at making them more obvious.
