View SMART results in GUI

Problem/Justification
There is no way to view anything about disk health or data, beyond simple green = good / notgreen = bad, within the interface. All information about disk hours, health, sectors, etc. is only accessible by resorting to command line or some scripts I’ve seen referenced in the forum. For a NAS OS, I find this VERY surprising.

Impact
There may not be much impact for power users who are very comfortable with the command line (and, importantly, KNOW the commands), but virtually every other user will benefit from having simple information about their disks available to them from somewhere in the gui. After all, I see it repeated often that TrueNAS is - first and foremost - a system for storage. Making critical information about the health and status of the disks available to most users should be a priority.

User Story
I just realized that features related to setting up and scheduling SMART tasks were added recently based on a feature request. This is good news. I think the natural extension of this is making that data available to the users that set these tests up in the first place. I am that user, as I went through and scheduled my smart tests and was very surprised to not be able to find any data after the tests ran. When I went on the forum and other sites to see where to find it, I only see references to CLI commands, scripts, or other methods for finding the SMART results.

What do you mean exactly? TrueNAS, and for that fact FreeNAS has always been able to schedule SMART testing, with one exception, NVMe drives (but a script can handle that for the moment). However now that smartmontools v7.5 has been formally released, I expect the smartd application to be upgraded in the near future. I don’t know if it will be in 25.10, but really hope to see it in 26.04.

But I agree, it would be useful if the data was easily available via the GUI. But wait, it is, well I think it is at least. You can use Scrutiny which is a GUI app in the Apps section, built into TrueNAS. Easy installation and access to the GUI. I have it loaded for when people mention it, I don’t actively use it, I use the script thing, or CLI if I need immediate and specific data.

I would recommend you promote something very specific in the feature request. Specifically exactly what to view, where to view it from, possibly the formatting of the data. You need to sell it to the group/team, and voting on your own suggestion would be a nice touch. I am not trying to be difficult for you, I am trying to explain what it takes to get a feature request accepted. And if you can put a business advantage spin on it, even better for iXsystems to invest the time to make it happen. Show them why it would be important, do not assume they should know it is important.

TLDR, just saw the word SMART and eager to tell everyone about this slick app that just appeared the other day. It’s call SCRUTINY and is very small and lightweight, it’s in the app store. Install that and it will immediately give you lots of useful info on each of your drives with zero configuration. Really cool. Here’s a brief shot of my pool and stuff.

Edit: of course you can drill down futher and further into each drive to see more information, this is the Glance dashboard, living up to its name.
