Virtualized Fangtooth 25.04-RC.1 will not bring up network interface if using vmxnet3 in Proxmox

I have a Virtualized TrueNAS scale/community edition on proxmox. I recently upgraded to Fangtooth 25.04-RC.1 from Scale 24.10.2. After rebooting the network interface would not come up. I am using vmxnet3 driver for the TrueNAS VM in Proxmox. I have been using this driver it has been working for a few years but the interface fails to come up on 25.04-RC.1 and works completely fine if I boot in Scale 24.10.2 or earlier. If I change the driver for the NIC in Proxmox to VirtIO or Intel E1000 the system come up correctly in 25.04-RC.1. Any thoughts as vmxnet3 has better network performance and has been working in scale for years now but fails to work now.

The error message in the console is “The web interface could not be accessed. Please check network configuration” and if i get into the shell it says the NIC is in a “down” state.

The release notes mention that vmxnet3 is not yet available to use for VM’s hosted inside truenas but I would not expect that that would prevent it from working as the TrueNAS host nic in a virtualized TrueNAS.

Any help would be appreciated and since i am new here how can I open a bug report against the RC.1?

I am using vmxnet3 in ESXi and it is working fine. I have not used Proxmox so I can’t provide any additional advice. Just wanted you to know the driver seems to be working fine here.

EDIT: My two cents on what you probably should do:

  1. Blow away your TrueNAS VM (NOT THE POOL) and recreate it from scratch.
  2. If you have the problem still, file a jira ticket and be very clear on what you have configured.

Joeschmuck did you try the new 25.04-RC.1? Are you willing to try?

Yes, I am currently using 25.04 RC.1 and have been for 2 days. I have rebooted the server a few times, I just rebuilt it so I had to shut it down to open the case and fiddle with cooling.

I did a fresh install of the 25.04-RC.1 and got the same results. Using vmxnet3 driver for the TrueNAS VM the RC fails to bring up the network interface.
