Which drive is offline?

The dashboard says 1 drive is offline, but it looks like 3 are having issues (sde, sdg, sdm). I have cold spares, so I figured I’d swap out the one that’s offline first, then let it rebuild, then tackle the next problems.

Bu I don’t see which drive is offline.

Image upload isn’t working. Color me surprised that this terrible forum software doesn’t work. :-/

I guess there’s no way to edit a post to get rid of a typoe. The dashboard says 1 disk has errors, and the notifications say:

Open a shell and run:

sudo zpool status

That should tell you which drive is offline.

Also, all those drives having issues at the same time feels like a controller error, odd for every drive to be having issues.

I have 14 drives. It is strange that 3 are having an issue, but that’s not all of the drives.

There’s no way to do it in the web gui???

It says no errors and all the drives are online. Why would the web UI and the command line disagree???

I can’t copy out of the web based CLI, and I can’t upload a screenshot, so there’s that too.

The web UI for zpool says the same thing as the CLI.

Can you please run the following commands in a shell (System Settings / Shell) and post the output here with the output of each command in a separate </> box:

  • lsblk -bo NAME,MODEL,ROTA,PTTYPE,TYPE,START,SIZE,PARTTYPENAME,PARTUUID
  • lspci
  • sudo sas2flash -list
  • sudo sas3flash -list
  • sudo zpool status -v

Thank you. With this detailed diagnostic information we will have a chance to work out what the problem is and what the cause is.

P.S. Please put your signature in a concertina like in my signature so we don’t have to keep scrolling past reams of duplicated signature.

I tamed my sig, but idk how to make a concertina.

Like I just said, I can’t copy out of the interface, idk why. CTRL + INS + C doesn’t copy the text.

I enabled SSH, but PuTTY is having a weird response. As soon as I enter the username, it errors out and mentions a key, which I’ve never seen PuTTY do before.

The SSH credentials in Backup Credentials > SSH Connections looks like an outbound connection, presumably meant for backing up data or something. Not the local SSH server for incoming connections.

How many posts do I have to make before I can upload a screenshot?

Just use the Shell in the UI under System Settings (with the cog symbol)

IS THERE SOME REASON YOU ARE IGNORING ME WHEN I TELL YOU THAT I CAN’T GET INFORMATION OUT OF THE WEB GUI?

I got SSH working. However, Truenas, PuTTY, and forum metadata DO NOT play nice. The SSH client in PowerShell worked fine. I couldn’t find any others on the internet.

I think I got these in the same order as you requested them:

errors: No known data errors

Looking over this data, I don’t see much of anything useful, and it completely contradicts the notifications that are complaining of issues.

The errors you mentioned in your initial posts are SMART errors and you haven’t posted the smart reports.

Run sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdX on each drive.
Replace X with the corresponding device name (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb, and so on).

To clarify, I say each drive intentionally, since it’s been more than a week since those errors were generated, there’s a fair chance you rebooted your server. When you do that the device names can move around so suddenly sda (and so on) refers to a different disk than it used to.

I’ll add that your lsblk is almost nonsensical, not sure what happened there but maybe the formatting broke it, the NAME column makes that apparent.

Yeah, I took the server down the other day, moved it to my workbench, and fired it up last night. I have 2 cold standby drives and was trying to figure out which drives I need to swap out.

“Run these random commands for random/no reason” is getting old though, what are your commands supposed to do and why are we running them?

lsblk looks fine to me, just says the drives are online though, which the web GUI also says.

You said you couldn’t see any errors in your previously assembled and posted data.
Since the alerts refer to SMART errors, running smartctl will let you identify which disks are the actual drives that are running into issues. It will uniquely do so by also showing you the serial number, lessening the risk of you pulling the wrong drives, if it comes to that.

smartctl is a basic tool.
Google it if you want to see sample output so you can make an informed choice of if it will be helpful or not.

This is what the lsblk should have looked like, if it was formatted correctly.
Especially note the dashes at the beginning of each row denoting each device and clearly letting you see any partitions. Your post does not look like that. In fact it suggests that sda1, sdb1, sdc1 and so on are all partitions of sda. That is nonsensical.
