Zpool CHKSUM - Help needed

Hi guys,

Believe this is my first post here and not for good reasons, I’m currently losing my mind with my TrueNAS server and I need some help with further troubleshooting.

I’ve been running a system for about 2 years without any major issues however, everything changed a few weeks ago.

A few weeks ago, I replaced a Hard Drive with an 8Tb drive to start the upgrading process of my server, however, whilst I was preparing to leave my house, I heard a *beep* coming from my server. Immediatly after the beep, I heard a hard drive starting to spin, this repeated every 20s more or less. I immediately was concerned and thought that not enough power was reaching the drives which was causing one to turn off and back on. I turned one of the drives off during the resilvering and it stopped.

Once the resilvering was complete, I confirmed the Power Supply was failing by swapping the power supply with the one on my gaming PC. Easy fix, I bought a new corsair PSU, installed on my server, plugged back the hard drive and everything was fine, no more beeping. I ran the server for a week, no errors or anything. Everything was perfect.

Since the NAS was running for a week without any major errors and I had enough space in the case, I decided to add a new drive to the VDEV so I added the previously removed drive to the pool, resilvering went just as you would expect and like that, a new drive was added into the pool.

Shortly after doing this, I started getting ZFS CHKSUM errors in my pool. These errors seem to appear at random. I’ve tried swapping the SATA controller card with a ASM1166, errors still occur, I’ve tried checking my motherboard manual, noticed that it uses a ASM1062 on 2 ports and 2 Other ports are linked to the CPU, so I wired my 2 App SSDs to the CPU links, boot SSD to the ASM1062 and all hard drives to the external card, errors still come. I checked all the S.M.A.R.T Tests and noticed that my WD Red Pro drive was increasing the amount of reallocated sectors so I contacted WD Support which promptly asked me to send it to warranty (hence why the below zpool status -v command shows one less drive and is running in degraded state, drive is in transit and I’m waiting for the replacement). Upon removing this drive, I’m still getting the CHKSUM errors after removing the drive, so it doesn’t seem like the WD Red was causing these issues. I’m currently out of ideas for troubleshooting and I need some help as it’s driving me crazy. I’ve also used memtest86+ to test the RAM, no issues.

Current specs:

CPU: Intel J5005

Motherboard: Asrock J5005-ITX

RAM: 16GB non-ECC

PSU: Corsair RMe 650w

Boot pool: 1x 256GB SSD connected to ASM1062 port on the motherboard

Apps pool: 2x 512GB in mirror connected to the CPU Link.

Storage pool: 4x 4Tb + 1x8Tb in RAIDz2 connected to a ASM1166 card.

I planned to get a LSI card however, this motherboard doesn’t support it due to the PCI lane limitations and since I’m getting married next year, the server upgrade is planned for after the wedding. I’ve also tried swapping the SATA card as previously I had one ASM1062 installed but still getting errors after swapping it.

Do not take anything I say as beating on you, I try to not assume anything, to include your skill level or what you have or haven’t done.

I would need to see the SMART output for each drive, this command smartctl -x /dev/??? Post using the </> above to retain the format of the data. This is important so we can read it easier.

It would help to know what version of TrueNAS you are running.

Run zpool clear Storage and then check you pool status zpool status -v and report it as well. Have you run these commands before for this problem? It looks like you just ran a scrub yesterday.

Your SATA add-on card could be at fault, but I’m not suggesting you should replace it, yet.

Did you recently change your TrueNAS version? If you did, you might want to roll back to the previous version to see if the problems clear.

I forgot to mention, I’ve tried clearing the pool with zpool clear Storage a few times, ran scrub every single time after the clear but the errors always return after a few hours. I’ve also re-seated the SATA cables for all drives (haven’t swapped them yet)

To rule out RAM, can you run a memtest for several passes or overnight if feasible?

I’ve ran 4 passes of memtest86+ without any issues. Is it recommended to do more?

I’ve done this before and after upgrading to the newest version of TrueNAS (in a desperate attempt to see if it would stop).

Hi, can you please remove one stick of RAM? That CPU officially supports 8GB. Above that, some people on the internet reported stability issues (random, most of the time a kernel panic). Please just give it a shot :upside_down_face:

This is not related to the memtest, this is a memory management related thing. The problem may occur when the RAM usage (allocated) exceeds the 8GB boundary. As far as I heard, the memory controller starts paging then, and that may cause unknown behavior, so look at this as a hardware limitation.

I actually ran into this myself with a J4205 a few years ago… :sweat_smile:

I haven’t actually considered this, thanks for the tip. I’ll now remove one of the RAM sticks and test it.

Let’s see what happens. Even if it doesn’t solve the issue, it is good to rule this out at least.

Are these Seagate drives? Given some of the raw values I’m guessing they should be.

Seagate translate - replace sd’x’ as needed--------

Add/remove a -v ###,raw48:54 as needed (### being replaced with parameter of interest)- some of these drives have different parameters of interest than what I’m used to & I’m too lazy to type out a custom command per drive. sudo in front of the command if you’re not running as root/admin. Realistically we want things like seek/read errors, uncorrected errors, crc errors, pending/uncorrectable sectors, etc to be either 0 or a low non-increasing value.

Unlike Joe, I’m more inclined to blame the sata cards; are the drives erroring out connected to the sata cards? If you move them over to the motherboard directly, do the errors follow the drive or does the drive connected to the sata card start creating problems? Might be worth looking into an HBA.

Indeed these are Seagate Ironwolf drives. I’ve been monitoring the logs of some drives since the PSU failure with smartctl -a /dev/sdX (same command to all drives, including the WD Red which failed). Maybe I should start logging these drives to a file and I could post prior and post error?

This night, before removing one of the RAMs, I’ve tried removing the power saving settings and let the disks always on as they should, it lasted until at least 02:00 in the morning before failing as this morning I had once again, the CHKSUM errors. What’s weird to me is that the errors occur in all drives, even in the one that isn’t there…

Answering your question about the HDDs, even connected to the board, yes, the errors do follow them as they were initially connected to the motherboard and SATA controller (had 2 in the motherboard and 3 in the SATA Controller for better performance).

Unfortunately, I cannot get an HBA card to put on this system as the PCI is only a PCIe Gen 2.0 1x slot. I do plan to do a system upgrade as this hobby grew on me but can only do it after my wedding.

I’ve now removed the second stick of RAM from the NAS and waiting to see if the errors come up again.

Before removing the stick, I’ve also done a stress test using: sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/Storage/testbench/testfile bs=1G count=64 oflag=dsync status=progress

No errors were shown during the test. I’ve tested both Hard drives and SSDs without any issues (i’ve decided to test both to see if there was any limitation that I was unaware of).

Could it be possible these are residual errors that are part of the metadata somehow or I’m just desperate to find an answer and this doesn’t even make sense? The reason why I’m saying this is because when I first hard all the failures, I got some corrupted files and upon deleting them from my pool, zpool status -v showed an error on a file as: Storage/pessoal/Pedro:<0x80c3>

In order to get rid of this, I had to move the data inside the dataset to a different one, delete the old dataset, create the dataset once again as I wanted, and move back the data.

Unfortunant, but since the errors follow the drives, I guess there is a solid chance it is the drives themselves.

I’d still run the smartctl command I gave to translate the raw values for the seagate smart fields, that gives you a readable number. If the drives tehmselves are reporting bad sectors, then no other tests are really needed :frowning:

I wasn’t aware until your post that for seagate drives the smartctl command had to be different, thank you very much for providing the command! All the 4 drive currently in the pool are ironwolf drives

To my untrained eye, the drives seem fine. If the error returns after the RAM is removed, I’m considering creating a small python script to run every 5m and log the zpool status -v and at what time the errors came up.

Just one question, why does zpool status -v returns:

even after scrubbing the data?

SDB has a seek failure, which I’m not experienced enough to say with certainry that is an equipment failure or not. Otherwise, drives seem healthy enough.

As mentioned above, I’ve tried geri91 advice and left the NAS running with just one stick of RAM.

The NAS ran just fine the whole day until somewhere during the night where the errors returned

It’s always the same amount of errors, on the same drives. and it goes beyond me why it even errors out on a disk that’s not even installed in the system (just received a mail that WD shipped the replacement today, incredible support on their side). I’m considering replacing all SATA cables now and reinstalling the RAM but any advice is welcome as I’m completely out of ideas.

today I’ve tried: installing back a known good SATA controller card with the same ASM chip as the motherboard and deleting the pool which had the corrupted file and error afterwards. To no avail, errors are back. I’ve now tried swapping all SATA cables with brand new ones (I had a bunch of them). If this doesn’t work, I’m going to start unplugging drives one by one to check if there’s something I’m missing and the S.M.A.R.T tests are picking up. After that, I’m out of ideas :smiling_face_with_tear:

I hate to be the one to say this, but it might be time to upgrade the motherboard to something that can support an HBA. At this point I think we’ll run in circles trying to identify if it is the drives - but we’re already working with sata cards that are well documented to not play nice with TrueNAS.

I’ve finally managed to fix the issue! Decided to pursue what I mentioned above and investigated a bit more about the error message. I was able to find a person in this forum with the same issue. Turns out this issue was caused by errors in the pool itself.

I’ve deleted the pool, wipped all drives and created a new Raidz2 pool. Transferred back all data and I’ve zero errors now (stable :slight_smile: )
