12tb SAS wont show up on SAS2308 + HP SAS Expander

Been running a SAS2308 in IT mode with HP SAS Expander in a 24 slot chassis for almost 10 years now.

Have recently used 3tb SAS drives, upgrade to 8tb SATA drives. I know I can run both SAS and SATA.

Just received some 12TB SAS Ultrastar DC HC520 drives, but that have SATA connectors. HUH721212AL4204. Since I have a SAS controller I don’t see this as a problem but not sure if the SATA connector would cause a problem?

Nothing shows in dmesg, drives sound like they spin up but nothing else after that.

I have no other SAS equipment I could check with, though I doubt 8 of these drives have faults.

The HBA is on 20.00.04.00, expander is on 2.02 (2.10 is around but not sure how to flash from within a freebsd based system).

Fixed by removing/covering pin 3. Some issue with backplanes that support both SATA and SAS on new drives with a “power disable” feature.

Knew I would find the issue right after posting a message… !
