App to use for external File Sharing

Hey everyone,

in the near future, I switch from Synology to TrueNAS because if I want to expand my storage, I would need a new Synology anyway (2 bay systems have their limits at some time).

I chose TrueNAS because it’s apparently the best solution for DIY NAS, and with my IT background (albeit not storage, but more OS), it should be easier for me to learn everything needed.

Anyway, what I wanted to ask is this: My wife wants to use the NAS too. She is a photographer, and wants to share complete photosets with her customers. So far, we use the Synology share function, where through Synology’s QuickConnect feature, they can access the files on my local NAS without me needing to drill holes in my firewall.

The closest thing I can think of for this is a Reverse Proxy with NextCloud that is pointing to the dataset containing the photos. However, I wonder if anyone has a better solution for this.

Thanks in Advance

Regards

Raine

Hmm maybe Seafile or Opencloud those are similar to Nextcloud but more focused on the sharing part.

In the next release truenas will get a websharing feature. iX made a showcase of the feature set in one of the last podcast episodes. I think this would suit your usecase very well. Personally i like the feature set, but not that it’s tied to the truenas connect cloud service.

Alright, so just a little bit longer, and then Websharing will come in stable. That sounds amazing. How and how well it works will remain to be seen, but that’s good news for now.

you should try Opencloud

I have installed Nextcloud, with the external storage plugin.
This allows Nextcloud users to login via smb to the NAS, and use the sharing feature of Nextcloud
