Critical Alert from Truenas Scale Setup!

Hi Everyone,

Woke up this morning to an email with a critical alert from my Truenas Scale server (version 24.10.2).

When I went to check it was already resilvering another spare drive. It was showing 2 degraded drives and a faulted drive (shown in photo).

After the resilvering had finished I restarted the server and it now shows only one drive (sda) with 2 errors (shown in photo).

My questions are:

  1. Which drive should I replace?
  2. Why is one of my drives now showing as an unused disk when all disks were in use except for the spare? I didn’t add any disks.
  3. Did I make a mistake restarting the server after resilvering?

This is my first time doing this and I don’t know what to do and don’t want to make a mistake so any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to ask me for any info you may need.

I don’t know what happened there.

Drive ‘sdb’ had errors and faulted. It started to rebuild to the spare ‘sde’ , and that had a buttload of errors for whatever reason.

Now your spare is sdf instead of sde, and the faulted drive is sda instead of sdb.

The device mappings aren’t static or really important afaik, but I would test that spare to make sure it’s still good. What were the errors?

Hi Jorsher,

Thank you for the reply.

Yeah, I am totally confused by all the drive letter changes and still don’t understand why one drive is showing as unused, like its not part of a pool? All 3.5" drives were part of Pool1 as either mirrors or spare. I had no unused drives. I really don’t know.

The alerts I received are:

Pool pool1 state is ONLINE: One or more devices is currently being resilvered. The pool will continue to function, possibly in a degraded state.

The following devices are not healthy:

  • Disk ST20000NE000-3G5101 XXXXXXXX is UNAVAIL

I am currently running a scrub on this pool to see if maybe it will correct itself, but as mentioned previously, I am completely ignorant in this situation. This is my first home server. It is not even two years old and all drives are 2 years old or less and purchased as new.

The only thing that I changed on the server yesterday was that I added NGinx Proxy Manager and I set up a few web addresses for some docker containers. Could this affect my pool?

Starting to wonder if I’m a victim of the fake Synology drive label scam that has been happening. I did purchase some drives of eBay as new, but I though it didn’t affect North America only Europe and area. Hmm…

Thank you
