Disks with exported pools, cannot import; 1000 offline uncorrectable sectors on HDD

Newbie here, been running TrueNAS scale for last two years or so. Last few months, my HDDs have been showing critical alerts in the Alerts tab (I don’t regularly log on to check on my NAS, mostly just use for Immich). Yesterday morning is when I noticed all of them, because Immich and my data wasn’t accessible. The latest alerts for the two HDDs are:

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 1144 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 555 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

Under Storage Dashboard, it shows “Disks with exported pools” as 2. If I click Import Pool, there is no option in the dropdown. Under Topology, it shows Data VDEVs as “Offline VDEVs”

Within the CLI:

So, this is where I’m stuck. Are my HDDs just fried and it won’t import the pool for protection? The pool seems to exist and even be “online”, so can I recover the data? How do I go about doing that, once I buy new HDDs, that is? I do have an offsite backup, but I would prefer to recover locally from these drives. Or am I just missing something else entirely with importing it?

Hundreds of uncorrectable sectors means that the drives are not healthy, but should not be dead yet.
smartctl -x /dev/sda and smartctl -x /dev/sdb will give a better picture. Please post the outputs as formatted text (</> button).

Pool status seems inconsistent. I’d first try with rebooting the NAS.

These two values inform you about detected shocks. If these two continue to go up it’s a sign that you may have an issue with how the drives are mounted. Look into vibration reducing washers or similar. Shocks or strong vibrations can cause hardware faults. I would go as far as to speculate that high G-sense values could void your warranty.

There are no Offline_uncorrectable errors on ZC19GZ06 (anymore?). Do you restart your system regularily? If you do it’s not inconceivable that both alerts refer to the same drive, but that it had different /dev/sdX-designations during the different boots. Is there a timestamp on the alerts? If so, does it suggest the alerts were triggered on the same boot?

Hmm, they’re both on little rubber feet, one inside and one ontop of the case. They’re on a shelf which could be getting bumped from time to time, but other than that I would think they’re pretty stable.

There are the main “Alerts” by checking the bell in the top right, in which case yes, there are timestamps. But it doesn’t seem to align with any restarts/reboots. Scrolling back over the past months you see both sda and sdb have increasing uncorrectable or unreadable (pending) sectors, as well as ATA error count increasing.

Over 9000 reallocated sectors… All those “offline” have been dealt with.
Both drives are due for RMA, if still on warranty.

But first the rescue:
zpool import

to see what’s wrong if the pool doesn’t import

It keeps failing to import, for a reason which is not clear to me.
You may try
zpool import -Fn Main
(safe dry run, no message would mean possible success)
and look again at the log messages.

Ah yeah okay, makes sense!

Trying the import code, it seems to try to run, but then the shell almost “resets”, never showing the code I put in previously.

Make sure you use a ssh connection for that. The built-in web shell is not suitable for operations that can take some time to complete.

Ahh, thanks for the tip! That solved it. But as for the results, no luck. The import code ran, but according to the GUI, it still shows as 2 disks with exported pools. So then I ran the debug log, here is the output:
