HELP disk failure

I have a Nas with Truenas SCALE since September. I have 3x12TB HDDs in RAIDZ1. Recently some of them looks like are failing.

I received these alerts on 31st of October

  1. Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
  2. Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], 8 Offline uncorrectable sectors

and these today 19th of November:

  1. Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], 8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors.
  2. Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], 8 Offline uncorrectable sectors.

But apart from these alerts nothing appears in the UI, no SMART error or anything else.

Should be worried about the disks failing? How can I diagnose the error? I really don’t know what to do, can someone help me solve the issue? Thank you

smartctl -x /dev/sdb
smartctl -x /dev/sdc

will show you the detailed SMART results.

Could be the same disc that is failing since linux names the first disc that comes online “a”

zpool status -v

show ?

/dev/sd? means not much. What is/are the serial number(s) of the drive or drives in question. I’m making a guess that it is the same drive having the issue.

Yes, you should replace a drive with offline uncorrectable errors, as it indicates the drive is failing. The Pending unreadable sectors indicates that a drive has sectors that it can’t read correctly, but it’s still attempting to correct them. If it continues or errors increase because pending sectors can’t be recovered, Truenas may offline the drive and degrade the Pool.

It is of my opinion which others may not completly agree to that you can do all the stuff people say do first like long smart tests, but it’s at the risk Truenas (zfs) will fail the disk at some point and offline it and therefore you are risking your data. It is better to just go ahead and change the drive out.

New ones can fail too if your unlucky.
Before you comit data to them. Do a burn in. And a long smart test afterwards.

When you replace the disc, dont disconnect the old ones. Do a replace. Otherwise you may lose the Pool during the resilver because of the added stress.

Seagate drives use a different way of showing read errors so it may be in your interest to convert it using for example this Seagate Error Rate Calculator.

ZJV4A37N (sda) and ZJV16W9S (sdb) both have reallocated sectors which is a warning sign.

sda has 10 Reported_Uncorrect and sdb has 8 Current_Pending_Sector and 8 Offline_Uncorrectable events logged. These compound the issues with reallocated sectors. Replacing them or at least having drives ready for replacement would be wise, plus of course verifying that your backup is working as expected.

I don’t see anything obviously bad or concerning with ZJV16R96 (sdc).
