Need help understanding if I should RMA a drive

I’ve had a FreeNAS/TrueNAS system running for 12 years, and never had a drive failure in that time.

In 2024, I built a new pool with 4x 8TB WD Red Plus drives, did SMART long tests and burn in testing with the drives and they all passed.

Earlier this month, during the scheduled scrub, one drive threw several uncorrectable read errors. I put the drive on a new SATA cable and a different port on the HBA, rebooted and scrubbed again. Still had uncorrectable read errors.

Ran a SMART long test on the drive, which came back fine. Scrubbed again, and again uncorrectable read errors.

Seems like the drive is no longer reliable, but am I missing something? I thought scrubbing would reconstruct the bad blocks and write them to new parts of the drive, so it would eventually migrate data off the bad part of the drive. But instead, the drive is being put into the FAULTED state and the pool is degraded

The system is a supermicro X10SL7-F with an integrated LSI 2308 flashed with IT firmware. It has 32GB DDR3 ECC memory, and an Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1270L v4 @ 3.00GHz.

The four data drives are in a RAID-Z2.

The SMART output for the drive in question:

sudo smartctl -a -x /dev/da0
smartctl 7.2 2021-09-14 r5236 [FreeBSD 13.1-RELEASE-p9 amd64] (local build)

I used to have problems with a Supermicro A2SDi-H-TF 4 8T disks in a small box case with a SFX power supply. There were random disk errors. It turned out the power supply was the problem. Not enough power. After installing a new 350W SFX power supply (the original only had 150W) all problems vanished.

Your systems also seems to be quite old. Maybe check your power supply. They are the #2 hardware failure cause, after #1 disk drives.

The power supply is a 550w ATX unit from Seasonic that’s newer than the rest of the system (2017). How would I check the power supply? Check the voltages with a multimeter? It seems to be running all other drives just fine.

It’s difficult. A multimeter won’t catch all problems. The easiest way is to borrow a spare psu from another system and see if the error persist.

All Drive manufacturers have their own tools to check their drives in order to prevent RMAing good drives. For WDC ist’s Kitfox.
