My disks failed with various symptoms

My dataLA pool is a RAIDz1 with 4x 1TB + 1x 500GB (Im expanding pool capacity). All system install on a Z210 machine with 16GB of ECC RAM.

Yesterday:

  • My sde disk got error “Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1” and failed long SMART test.

Today:

  • My sdf disk got error “8 Offline uncorrectable sectors” and “8 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors” and run long SMART test very long.
  • My dataLA pool DEGRADED when my sdb FAULTED with no error, and 4 remaining disks got 6 checksum error.

After restart the system:

  • My dataLA pool ONLINE but my sdb got 1 read error, and my sdf got 2 write error (increase to 14 write error after 14 hours).
  • My sde disk still failed long SMART test. My sdf disk still running long SMART test.

This is an SMR drive and is highly not recommended for any NAS use, especially ZFS.

I do not see anything actually wrong with this drive.

This drive also is SMR.
And the same here, I see nothing wrong with the drive.

Your problem is you are running SMR drives with a ZFS file system. The Zpool errors are a direct result of that.

You can run a scrub zpool scrub dataLA and if no files are corrupt, then run zpool clear dataLA to clear the errors however they will come back.

I didn’t say that. I said using SMR drives will cause the ZFS errors to come back. A scrub is a read operation, it is during write operations that things go bad.

They are slow for one reason, the way SMR drives write data.
