installing plex on a linux machine easy.
installing plex on core advanced.
installing plex on scale way more complicated than needs to be.
all the videos do not give utd info and they gloss over and you miss out on key moments. can someone assist me with eather a new up to date video or remote in my system and help me configure this?
How about documenting your steps on installing on Scale and where you are getting stuck. It may help to see from your point of view.
Are you comparing the systems and methods directly and are they the same? Do they all use ‘jails’, ‘containers’ or VMs?
linux install drive mount drive add media point plex to drive/media.
core create pool, media acl,smb add media create jail/plex/acl point plex to media on pool.
scale from what i have gathered is you need an acl for user/media,plex,plex data, plex storage, plex media, plex transcode, and a new one to point plex to your pool media and still unable to see media. oh and the obvious smb share
I highly recommend NOT watching youtube for technical information. If you can try to get the habit of using the built in documentation and keep a notebook close by. Have you tried the help documentation?
EDIT: What I mean, is that videos are good for very high-level discussions and are short (minutes long). Setting something up can/will take a while and having a document you can go back and forward in will help you. Having a notebook close by will help you take short-hand notes you can reference if need be -e.g. “See the apps section of the on-line help”.
i ried that first and what i found was it was out of date as well
Oh that’s not fun. Can you boot into TrueNAS CORE? Your plex may be older but that’s not a big deal.
EDIT: dumb autocorrect.
after system update it would not allow access to plex or anything
I’m really sorry. I wish I could help. My TrueNAS is just a NAS now (and on CORE; because I don’t need anything more at the moment) so, I don’t know much about SCALE and how to set things like this up.
Are you hear just to complain. If so, you are better off sticking with plain Linux. If you want help, you need to be helpful back and provide better information.
I was going to make a VM of the current TrueNAS and follow along with trying to set up Plex. I was trying to get an idea of what you went through.
You can give feedback for the Documentation if you see errors or if something is uncertain. iX Systems is good at working with the community.
I’ll just quote this. When just giving a thumbs up won’t suffice.
im not here to complain i need this up and running.
so as i do the steps i will inform you here.
thank you for helping.
sofar i have created my pool (pool) with 3 drives raidz1.
created MEDIA dataset as generic.
Is your MEDIA dataset a Child of your root dataset or pool?
Shay is my base pool / dataset. I created the BU2 dataset inside and the SMBUSER just for SMB sharing. SMBUSER is the owner of BU2.
It might help other viewers if you just go through the steps and post screenshots here. I am hoping others with more experience will give feedback. You aren’t the first with Plex related trouble.
Screenshots from Core
Just seeing if this thread helps any?
former steps i created pool from pool i created a media dataset and a plex dataset.
under plex dataset i created the storage dataset media dataset transcode dataset and config dataset.
then credintuals i created venom (not child) from that i created smb and can see it on my local machine. i then installed plex and did the host /mnt/pool/plex/data another host /mnt/pool/media another mnt/pool/plex/config another host /mnt/pool/plex/transcode then add host mnt/pool/MEDIA oh and cant forget plex is installed at this point
i think i am getting stuck from this point?
ok figured it out.
if you follow to this point you need to make sure that in the smb shares you add apps to user and user to apps. also you need to disable a setting in apps advanced settings. thank you guys.
