Noob here - TrueNas Scale Won't Install

I’m new to this Nas thing and I am trying to install TrueNAS Scale on an old pc but it keeps crashing and throwing errors at me.

Also tried to install OMV but same thing.
Specs are:
MB:Gigabyte H57M-UBS3 Rev 1.0
CPU: Intel Core i5-650 3.2GHz
RAM: 2x8GB G.Skill High Performance Memory Kit 1600MHz (running at 1333MHz)
SSD: Samsung 870 EVO 500GB (boot drive)
HDD: WDRed WD4003FFBX

My guess would be to redownload the TrueNAS installer and recreate the install flash drive and try again.

So you have a WD HDD, and a SSD as a boot drive. From what are you installing you TrueNAS image from?

I try to not assume anything so i could ask you some pretty stupid sounding questions.

If you are installing from a different device, explain it and how it was created. There are many forum threads about creating a proper installation drive.

I’m thinking your install USB is faulty or was burnt incorrectly.

Or the iso is truncated.

Try using Ventoy and just popping the iso in its iso folder.

Im using a 64GB USB flash drive to install TrueNAS. The iso was downloaded on my windows computer and it was flashed with Etcher.

I’ve had luck with Etcher in the past.

Tried to install it again with a fresh iso but it seems that it has other problems.

It also crashes when Extracting [8%] then it says kernel panic or something like that.

Two things:

  1. Have you tried a different USB drive?
  2. Have you tried a different USB port?
  3. Have you tested the system for stability? CPU Stress Test, RAM Test, etc.

Try to run memtest86, this all might be caused by bad RAM.

If you used Ventoy, then you just copy the memtest86 ISO to the USB drive and boot into it.

I have tried both and this pc was running windows 10 although it wasn’t supported so it got a stress test that way.

Update!
I switched my ram sticks to older ones and it ended up working. I guess my MB didn’t like that it was a newer type of ram.

Assuming a memtest would’ve picked up a failure.

Not sure if a memtest was run. Maybe just different usb and usb ports tried?
