Not seeing automatic snapshots from Multi User Time Machine shares

Running 25.04, recent build. I created time_machine dataset and set up time_machine SMB share with Multi User Time Machine preset. Created different users for the different macs, I have 2 of them connected to this share performing time machine backups. As expected, child datasets were auto created for each of the users, but I am not seeing any snapshots automaticallly created after several days’ worth of time machine successful completed backups (I searched in snapshot list). Other than other posts I can’t any documentation on this feature and how to enable/troubleshoot the automatic snapshots. I guess could set up a snapshot schedule but then I couldn’t be sure that the snapshots wouldn’t be created in the middle of a backup which is not really helpful in terms of restoring a corrupted sparebundle. Any way to troubleshoot why the auto snapshots are not happening?

I didn’t know this was a feature myself… its not in the docs. Where do you see it posted?

Normally, I’d do a snapshot at about 3.30am. Its not often I’m still working on things. I’m sure Time Machine can cope with an incomplete backup…

Here are some posts on the subject, including some information from the developer of the feature:

Just badging here to say this feature didn’t work for me either on 24.10.2.1. I have just set up tiered snapshots.

Thanks… we should include this more clearly in the documentation.

There is a (private) ticket NAS-135813 on this being reviewed. There may be a bug.

Thanks - I can’t see the private ticket so any follow up info after it’s evaluated would be appreciated. I will do periodic scheduled snapshots in the meantime.

Just to add that I am also seeing this problem, no automatic snapshots are being created on my TimeMachine dataset since May, which is roughly when I upgraded to 25.04.1, so feels like a bug in this release.

Any update on this?
Do we know if it’s fixed in 25.04.2.4?

It is not.

This ticket has been closed as duplicate of NAS-135813

That’s a private ticket.

@Captain_Morgan Could you please provide an update?

I’m on F2.5 and I’m still having this issue.

Is there any way to track its progress? Any suggested workarounds?

I seet that ticket NAS-135813 is now closed as “Done” and the ticket Fix versions are stated as 25.10.1 and 25.10.0.1. However, when I look at the full changelog in the release notes at 25.10 (Goldeye) Version Notes | TrueNAS Documentation Hub that ticket does not appear on the list.

Is there a way to verify whether the fix was added to 25.10.1?

It is in the release notes for 25.10.0.1.

Thanks! I thought that selecting the dropdown for 25.10 (All) would include “all” the sub-versions so I didn’t check the individual one for 25.10.0.1 - I see it now thanks for pointing it out.

Sorry if this is a dumb question - if the ticket shows up in 25.10.0.1 but not when I select 25.10.1 does that still mean that the fix also made it to 25.10.1?

Yes. Generally fixes are placed into master and then backported into all relevant branches. I have seen a couple of unrelated reports of time machine snapshots not occurring for some users due to the macos tahoe client never disconnecting from share after backing up. We snapshot after the backup is complete and client disconnects. I don’t see this with my Tahoe clients.

FYI this appears to be fixed for me now with the upgrade to v25.10.1 (Goldeye).

I am now seeing automatic snapshots being created after every hourly TimeMachine backup from my Mac, which is running Tahoe 26.1.

I didn’t have to change any settings on the share or elsewhere in TrueNAS.
