Hello! I have a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro, 2021) and I want to upgrade my networking to 2.5G. I’ve already purchased Intel i226-V for my NAS and now I need some way to connect my laptop to server with this speed. I found some UGREEN options, but they have Realtek chips (Or Realtek is a problem only for server and for macbook it will be fine?). Could you please suggest something or at least tell me how to search (and what to look for). Thanks
IMHO Realtek if the OS supports it, would be fine for a client.
AFAIK the reason Realtek isn’t recommended in server setups, is that:
It loads the Main/Server CPU(s), a lot more than an Intel Chip does …
Much more interrupt activity etc.
That would have a bad impact on a “Multi client” Server setup.
On a Client that load (especially for 2.5Gb) would probably not be essential, as it would only impact the client it self. And most modern Clients have lot’s of CPU power. If worst case would be that you would “only” have 2.3Gb throughput to the NAS, it would still be better than 1Gb.
