Problem on accessing the NAS from public ip

Hello Everyone,
First of all, I am new to this forum and also new to using NAS.
I start setting up a TrueNAS 2 weeks before.
My system is a old motherboard with an AMD CPU, 8 G of nonECC ram, 2 x 4T harddrive.
Truenas Core stable – TrueNAS-13.0-U6.3

I have been setting up the pool and a users.
Now I can access to the Adminstrator login page to the GUI and also find the Truenas server from a Windows PC on the same local network.
So at least, for the moment I can access the NAS from within the same LAN.

HAve bwen working last week to find a way to access the NAS from external network (mobile network or other computers outside the LAN). So far I am able to setup the DDNS, and the port forwarding on my router to my TrueNAS server.

However, When I try to access the NAS from outside with my no-ip Host name with a port 443 (443 is the port i used in port forwarding setting), I ended up at the Adminstrator login page, which only accept my root login.
PS.- although I still could not get the access on mu mobile phone, but at least I can get this on my office computer (Windows PC)

At this point, I am struck. I have absolutely no idea where to look.

I am hoping you guys can guide me through this issue.

Regards
Tai

TrueNAS is not hardened to be exposed to public Internet…
It is advised to NOT use port forwarding but to set up a VPN to access your local network remotely.

  1. Sign up to Tailscale
  2. Replace TrueNAS CORE with TrueNAS SCALE 24.10
  3. install the Tailscale app on your TrueNAS box, checking the “Host Network” option
  4. install the Tailscale app on your computers, and you’ll be able to access your files from anywhere, in a safe, easy way

Tailscale is WireGuard based, so you’ll get better performance than most other VPN solutions like OpenVPN; also, it works without the need for port forwarding on your router, which can lead to all sorts of security issues (you’re strongly encouraged to disable port forwarding right now…).

Thx for your advice.
Will certainly look at it.

Since i have no experience on Truenas, would like to stay in Truenas core and openvpn first to get a feel on using NA.S before moving to a new version

Thanks

CORE is a dead (well, mostly dead) product. iX has been recommending SCALE for new deployments for well over a year. Get the feel for using the live, supported product.
