Setup TrueNAS Network Settings (newbie question)

hi guys can anyone help a total newbie at this setup fixed IP addresses on truenas core ??

ive got the software installed and I can log in to the UI but id rather give it a fixed IP address not a DHCP one if that makes sense.

thanks for any help.

thanks for the reply I have looked there but for some reason I can’t figure out where I am going wrong. ive tried to setup it to example 192.168.1.208 and it says its working but when I try to check for any updates it says there is no network available.

maybe I’m doing something wrong ??

How is the status on the dashboard? Can you try a ping from another machine to your TrueNAS machine?

You also need to configure a default gateway and a DNS server IP address (both will likely be the IP of your router). These are in the global network settings.

If you set a fixed IP address in Network > Interfaces manually, you also need to go to Network > Global Settings and set default gateway and name server manually. With DHCP these are provided by the DHCP server.

Try to reserve/assign the IP address from your router. I would suggest you login to your router and see if you can identify the TrueNAS from its MAC address and/or NetBIOS name and reserve it from there.

Hi Guys I somehow botched the whole thing up and had to reinstall TrueNas I couldn’t get back in to it no matter what I tried.

ill watch some video’s on YouTube now maybe they can help me out more.

I did set static IP addresses on network interface bge0 and bge1 as my server has 2 network adapters as well as an ILO

its an HP Microserver Gen8

if you guys have any other ideas of what step I missed id be grateful the only part I didn’t touch was the global settings page as I didn’t find that one.

Unless they’re on different subnets, this is an invalid configuration. Just use one of them.

In the web UI? Network → Global Settings. I’m not sure how better to explain it.

Thanks for the reply. and yes you’re right they need to be on 2 separate networks to work out.

ive got a static ip address setup now for the first ethernet port.

is there anyway to bridge both network ports ?? I dunno if that will help as it just sits there otherwise with no IP address.

thanks again

You can theoretically bridge them but what do you intend to achieve by that?

If you plug both into the same switch you will create a bridging loop bringing down your network.

The only supported way to have a single connection run over two ports is to use a managed switch and LACP.

It’s perfectly common to use only one network interface if a server comes with more than that.

thanks for the reply. I didn’t know it would cause issues so ive just left it with the management interface connected and the 1st ethernet port all running at gigabit speeds.

thanks guys for all the help here.
