I am having issues copying to any of my SMB shares, the files range from 10GB to 100GB in size but no matter if I copy one or multiple it either hangs around 99% on a single file and the shares eventually go offline displaying a red x.
On multiple files at the end of each transfer the speed drops to 0, hangs for a random amount of time and either eventually moves onto the next file or the shares go offline.
During the copying I am unable to access the shares and just get the blue spinning wheel.
I have tested this with a Windows VM withing scale and also a laptop running Windows 11 with the same behavior.
Running scale 24.10.2.1
HP micorserver gen8
Xeon E3-1230 V2
16GB Ram
Mirrored SSD boot drives.
I do have a bridge network setup so the Windows VM could access the SMB shares.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Welcome to the TrueNAS Forums.
You have left out some information, the main ones are the version of TrueNAS you are using and the drives and layout. You may need to include the NIC type as well, I don’t personally know if the HP system comes with a Realtek or Intel NIC but if this is a RealTek NIC, that would be the first thing I would say is the problem. But there is a lack of information so it is just a guess.
I would also add in how long the system has been running, and under what kind of usage. Have any stability tests been conducted? There are a lot of things we could ask. Are the cooling fans all running properly? It can go on and on. So please read and add in the extra information. And do not forget to include some data on the Windows machine as well.
And again, Welcome to the Forums

Joe made many good points, be sure to start there.
In addition it would be good to know if you are doing these file transfers using Windows Explorer or using some other tool, Teracopy is known to be used sometimes, and be the cause of some issues.
HI, I did include the version of Truenas.
Scale 24.10.2.1.
Laptop is running windows 11 with 8GB RAM.
Windows VM is running in host pass through CPU with 4GB Ram.
Googling the nic it shows as a HPE Ethernet 1GB 2 port 332i adapter.
I have a mirrored boot pool using 2 x 500GB SSD’s.
Main pool is set to Raidz1 which includes 4 x 4TB and 1 x 6TB hard drives.
I am using Windows explorer to copy the files. I can sometimes leave it and when it hangs at 0 transfer speed it will sometimes continue.
The speed it copies at when using SMB seems to go too quick when compared to midnight commander, I wondering when it hangs at 0 is it actually still copying the file in the background but that isn’t been displayed. Not sure if that can be changed to show the actual transfer.
Sorry, I didn’t see, I read right over it.
How long have you waited for the file to complete copying?
Your TrueNAS system only has 16GB RAM, that leaves a very small ARC so I would not guess this would take a long time.
What are the exact make/model of the two drives? This is very important as I am now thinking SMR.
Please post the output of the following commands. If you are not logged in as root, start the command with sudo
. Post everything in it’s own preformatted test section (the </>
icon above).
zpool status -v
smartctl --scan
This command will provide you the drive names (sda, sdb, sdc) to use in the next command.
smartctl -x /dev/sda
(use the two drives for your pool. sda could be your boot-pool) and this should be a fairly long output, we need it all.
Those are the first steps to take. I am also a bit fuzzy about the VMs you are running. Are you trying to use a TrueNAS VM of Windows 11? If yes, then transfer speeds should be faster, significantly faster. If the transfer is to an external Windows Laptop (as you said), how is it connected? WiFi, LAN cable?
That should be enough for now. The ball is back n your court.
The Windows VM on my Truenas is running server 2022 and the laptop is running Windows 11.

Having a similar issue with 24.10.2.1. Qbittorrent over SMB is complaining about IO issues. From other clients it seems to be working fine.
With all the issue I was having with SMB my system ended up failing, one of my pools exported itself and my main data pool wasn’t accessible anymore, thought I had lost everything.
I did panic but I had recently backed up my configuration file, I re-installed 24.10.2 and imported my pools, granted I didn’t think it would work but hours later I have my data back and m up and running.
SMB is still problematic though, hangs at 99% when copying like it hasn’t finished, I have resorted to using midnight commander and just using SMB to delete and move within the same folder structure.
