So, what happens is, when there’s an enclosure, I believe all the checks fail, and function returns None. In this case, we have another way to look at a unique identifier for the device, which is wwid file, which contains the serial number as the third field.

I’ve repeated some of your work and additionally dug into the kernel source. IMHO a workaround is within reach.
