TrueNAS CLI ( grube) Becomes Unusable Over Time on Local Display

Good morning,

I’m currently testing TrueNAS to see if it could serve as a good replacement for my existing system.
I’ve been running it for a while with a small 10-inch monitor connected directly to the TrueNAS server.
Over time, I’ve noticed that the CLI menu becomes jumbled, and it seems impossible to interact with it properly anymore (see screenshot).
Is there a way to resolve this? I found it very convenient to be able to perform tasks like rebooting directly from the CLI menu using just a keyboard and screen.

Thank you in advance for your help.

P.S.: I searched the forum thoroughly but couldn’t find a similar question. My apologies if this has already been addressed.

Tnx Andre

What is the display resolution? Most thing are done with the web GUI with TrueNAS. Have you set up SSH yet? Is there anything else you can tell us about how or when this starts to occur?

Hello,

I’m using a 1024×600 (10-inch) HDMI-connected monitor, mainly for direct maintenance on the TrueNAS system assuming the CLI menu works properly. (on 24 inch same issue)

It doesn’t seem to be a resolution or scaling issue. Instead, after some time, the OS appears to cause some kind of terminal corruption the CLI output becomes scrambled, and occasionally I even see random “Linux” messages or lines mixed in.

At that point, I can only use the keyboard directly on the TrueNAS menu (e.g., selecting option 7 for the CLI), but nothing actually happens on screen.

It looks like TrueNAS somehow breaks or loses the CLI display session.

I have SSH working indeed.

P.S. After a reboot, everything works fine again for a while.
I’ve already reinstalled TrueNAS at least three times, but the issue keeps coming back.

You might boot up a live Linux version and run CPU and RAM tests to help rule out those two. Memtest86 and CPU stress tests?

Good evening,

I can run a stress test with > yes /dev/null &

(in my case multiplied by 12, since I have 12 cores).

But maybe I’m missing the point? Because I have the feeling this is a TrueNAS issue, or perhaps something in the TrueNAS settings.
I don’t really understand what a stress test has to do with it, especially since this server is still in the testing phase and the CPU usage is at 0% when this happens.
Of course, I’ve already done a general stress test before, but whether I do or don’t run it makes no difference to the issue I’m experiencing.

My question is also whether others who have a monitor connected directly to their TrueNAS server via HDMI are seeing the same problem —
that the CLI menu, which is initially displayed correctly, suddenly becomes garbled, disappears, and stops working (options 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, etc. no longer respond).
When I reboot TrueNAS, the CLI menu appears fine again — but only for a while.

Do you see any other post about your issue? You have ‘reinstalled TrueNAS at least three times, but the issue keeps coming back’.

You need to check for hardware problems. Are you using a wireless keyboard? Do you have a cat napping on your keyboard or playing with your mouse?

This is the first post I have noticed with this problem. All the TrueNAS Scale versions have been tested and stable, unless you are on a Release Candidate or a Nightly version.
