TrueNAS share not working as expected

Hi Folks, I am using 25.10.3.1 Goldeneye and I am having difficulty seeing the SMB share in Windows 10/11. The issue may be due to problems with my Share ACL or my File System ACL but I am not sure.

I can see the the TRUENAS box when I open Network –> Computer –> TRUENAS just fine. When I click on TRUENAS I can see the Share that I have named “jriver-media”. When I map that network drive it maps it as \\TRUENAS\jriver-media and assigns a driver letter to it. Pressing “Finish” in windows results in the sub-directories immediately showing up including items entitled “Movies”, “TV Shows”, etc. as I expected to see. (Note: currently I have a QNAP NAS to this TrueNAS box via QNAP’s HBS3 and HybridMount capabilities and appears to be working nicely.)

The problem that I cannot seem to resolve is that when I try and access the sub-directories I mentioned earlier, “Movies”, “TV Shows”, etc., I get a Network Error stating that Windows cannot access \\TRUENAS\jriver-media\Movies because I do not have permission to access \\TRUENAS\jriver-media\Movies. Contact your network administrator yada, yada, yada.

I am stumped as to why I can map the share but can’t see the directories within that share. Can anybody please suggest where I should be looking to resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

What account are you using to login to the share? Does that account exist on TrueNAS? Does the share have Unix permissions to allow that account access? Otherwise, you’re logged in with the permissions of the nobody account.

Hi Samuel and thanks for taking the time to help. I am not sure how to determine if the share has UNIX permissions or not. I didn’t see that option when I set up the share but I will look into it further.

The accounts in “Credentials” on TrueNAS are currently root, truenas_admin, and Joe. The Joe account is local, has Full Admin and SMB access. I believe but will have to further verify that Joe is the actual account that I am using. For what it’s worth, the QNAP application is logging into and transferring data to the TrueNAS via the “Joe” account if that helps.

I’ll continue to try and see what’s up in the interim.

Update. I tried using a Windows 10 computer that is also on the network and I can access the share and its directories and sub directories just fine.

Must be something peculiar to the Window 11 setup I was using before.
