Cannot install TrueNAS in Proxmox VM

I already have both TrueNAS Core 13.0-U6.1 and TrueNAS Scale 24.04.1.1 installed on my test Proxmox server and both have been working fine for many months now.

However, I wanted to test TrueNAS Scale 24.10.2 so I uploaded the ISO (checking the SHA256 signature) to my Proxmox test system.

I then created a VM exactly the same as my existing 24.04.1.1 system (16GB memory, 4 CPUs, default SeaBIOS, default Display, default i440fx machine, VirtIO SCSI Single controller and a local 32GB hard drive for boot).

The I open a console and booted the ISO. The boot showed a message about “Error terminal serial isnt found” but then continued on to the normal TrueNAS install screen. I selected option number 1 - Install and hit the OK button. The system then displayed the option to select where to install TrueNAS (sda QEMU HARDDISK – 32GiB). But there is no way that I can select the drive. My screen cursor will not go up or down to allow me to select the boot drive!

I have tried this with all versions (22, 23 and 24) of Scale and with two versions of Core with the same results.

Without being able to select where TrueNAS is to be installed, I cannot get the software loaded.

Does anybody have a solution to this problem.

Like I said previously, I already have both TrueNAS Scale and TrueNAS Core installed on both my test server (Intel Core i5-13500, 64GB memory, 2TB nvme VM storage) and my production server (Intel Xeon E-2236. 64GB ECC memory, 2x2TB nvme VM storage in a ZFS Mirror).

Please Help!

I expect it’s highlighted already–hit the space bar to select it, then Enter.

Although these shouldn’t be causing your problem, they’re quite old–UEFI and Q35 are likely better choices.

Dan, thank you, thank you, thank you!

I’ve been pulling my hair out for three days with this! I know that I’ve had problems in the past, installing TrueNAS on an old (circa 2008, Core 2 Duo, 16Gb memory) box, but don’t remember having problems on either of my newer boxes till this week. Something as simple as “hitting the space bar” just never occurred to me. I think I tried every key combination EXCEPT the space bar! Can’t see the trees for the forest!

Thanks again.
