HDD failed, pool gone?

I have a hard drive that failed or is failing badly. I rebooted and my system would not load anything, it would just say dashboard and not show anything. I removed the failing hard drive and now the system boots. The drive is in a raid and only 1 disk failed, so I should still see the pool, however it just says OFFLINE with an export/disconnect button. I have new drives to put it that I need to migrate the data to (and a backup of the data itself on another drive) but I’m waiting on a controller card so can’t connect them yet. Why isn’t the pool showing up with the other 3 drives still connected and working?

Thanks

RAID Z1, Z2? When you set it up, how many parity drives did you select?

Z1 1 parity

This might need a guru, of which I am not…

It might sound stupid, but are you sure you pulled the right drive? Or jostle a cable knocking a second drive offline?

What happens if you put the drive back in? Will it not boot again?

I gave up and pulled all the drives and am in the process of copying the data back over from my backup.

post the output of zpool status and use the code tags to ensure the proper format of the text is represented.

To me when I read this statement:

Sounds like it booted to the dashboard with the suspect drive installed.

When we need to assist in troubleshooting, we need very specific information in order to lend you a good helping hand. You should not allow us to make assumptions. It is not being mean, it is attempting to get the facts so we are not guessing and we can solve your problem quickly.

In my signature below are some links, the link to Joes Rules should be read. You don’t need to read the entire thing, it is long, however the first few paragraphs cover it and then the section on hard drives for your situation.

With a RAIDZ1 with 4 drives, you can loose one drive and the pool still operates. If you loose one more drive, your pool is gone. Data recovery can be done but generally at a very high cost $$$.

If you have the ability to copy off your data, you should do that, at least the important stuff.

Once you post the data requested, then we can move forward. We = me or any other qualified person. But if the pool is still working and you already pulled the failed drive, then the recovery is easy and it is listed in the user guide.
