TrueNAS Scale Will Not Complete Start Up

  1. The config file is named: truenas-Versionnumber-Stringofnumbers.tar
example of one of my saved configs is: truenas-25.10.0.1-20251123153621.tar
  2. It should be under /var/db/configs-some-long-hex-id
  3. Your Storage is fine. All you have to redo is users, permissions, network and smb/nfs share settings

@JonnyAlpha When you boot up your current TrueNAS system do you show a list of previous Boot Environments? Previous versions of TrueNAS as you have upgraded? You can try booting one of those to see if that gets you in or gives you the same errors.

Had a search on my mac for a possible backup file and no joy. Pulled the SSD from the TrueNAS and plugged it in my Linux machine in the workshop using a SATA to USB cable. Doen’t show up in finder but was visible if I used:

sudo fdisk –l

I have it plugged into my mac and using:

diskutil -list

I get the following:

/dev/disk2 (external, physical):
   #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *40.0 GB disk2
   1: Bios Boot Partition 1.0 MB disk2s1
   2: EFI EFI 536.9 MB disk2s2
   3: ZFS 39.5 GB disk2s3

I’ve tried installing openzfs on my mac and can see the boot-pool in Disk Utilities, I seem to be able to mount it but cannot list the contents.

I have just booted the SuperMicro Server using the USB I flashed with TrueNAS Scale iso, checkd the boot priority and it was set to and it has booted into Kubuntu?

Reflashed the USB using the same iso and this time I used F11 and selected USB.

This time it booted into TrueNAS Scale, however there appeared to be a lot of errors before presenting the TruesNAS 24.10.1 Console Setup (see attached image).

One in the console I selected Install and noticed that the SSD drive that I am using has Kubuntu on it  so the boot order was wrong earlier

However there still appears to be a problem.

I managed to install TrueNAS and the IP address is the same as before. So I managed to get into the TrueNAS web interface. The guide I am following is either out of date or the problems I am having is causing me to see a different screen.

I am trying to import my pool and if I click on Storage, I don’t see any discs only the option to create or import a pool? So I selected import and after a while the name of my old storage came up NAS_Storage. However it just sits at pool.import_pool.

I am guessing you should post back the results from the following commands so we get an idea of the current status of your system and the pool import. Please post back using Preformatted Text mode (</>) or Ctrl+e on the toolbar. The ā€˜import’ command shouldn’t do anything but just report info. It might be a good idea to check on the health of your HDs. The last command and post each drive back in it’s own Preformattted text window.

Just move backed into the house and reconnected and noticed these messages:

And I have just tried importing the pool NAS_Storage again and after a short while this page appeared:

What do I do now?

Yes, your drive with the serial number WD-WMC1U6178752 is showing errors:

It also failed its recent (and only) short SMART test.

You are missing the Toshiba from the ā€˜smartctrl’ data. I only see the two WD Green. One has 5 reallocated_sector_ct. Your dashboard is showing a failed SMART test. I don’t know if that is your boot drive or the HD with the sectors.

It looks like you have your pool back, right now. Do you have a backup of all your data from that pool?
Get a backup of your system configuration file in case the boot-pool dies and we need to install again.

It would be good to run SMART Long tests on all your drives and post back the results. Your alerts show two critical alerts on different drives.

As a side note, I don’t know if I would trust WD Green drives for NAS use. Consumer type drives have different firmware etc and sometime behave in unexpected ways to the NAS software. You can search interet for articles explaining why to use NAS type drives.
ā€œNAS hard drives are generally recommended, as their firmware is tuned for server workloads,
with desktop-oriented features disabled or set to more appropriate timingsā€ Snip-it from the TrueNAS hardware guide 2021 R2 PDF.

Done

Will do

Yes I agree - I keep meaning to invest in 3 x WD Red 2TB Drives

Double check any drives you will acquire to make sure they are not SMR types. We usually research the model numbers and double check.

SMR vs CMR ServeTheHome

TrueNAS Docs - WD Red SMR Drive Compatibility with ZFS

I have run the SMART test, where can I download the results?

This should bring up the test results for all your drives by using the CLI.
for disk in /dev/sd?; do; sudo smartctl -x $disk; done
If you want to do disk by disk, just do the sudo smartctl -x /dev/sdX and fix the drive name sdX for each drive.

Here’s the results:

And this:

I am in the process of running a scrub, but what other steps should I take now?

This drive may need to be replaced. You got another Reallocated_Sector_Ct. I would keep a recent copy of your system configuration in case the boot drive dies. I didn’t see a SMART test for that but you did show a screenshot of the Alert with unreadable as SDA above.

You aren’t using much space so I would just make sure you have another copy of the data somewhere. You probably could clear the errors and just watch the system.

If you are planning on HD replacements, we suggest you stick to models meant for NAS use. WD Red Plus or Pros, Toshiba N300 and Seagate Ironwolf are a few examples. Those should all be CMR types. If you go with consumer models, you want to stay away from anything that uses SMR for recording.
